A TODDLER has died with his parents by his bedside after suffering a mystery virus.

Alfie George Wright passed away at Stafford Hospital just four hours after being admitted to have blood tests for a suspected virus on Monday last week.

The 18-month-old's parents David and Sue Wright, of Lilac Close, Uttoxeter, are struggling to come to come to terms with the loss.

Mr Wright, aged 47, said: "He had suffered all the normal illnesses, coughs and sniffles, that you expect in a baby, and nothing else.

"He had not been too well for a few days so we took him to the doctors.

"The doctor suggested we take him to hospital for blood tests.

"He died within four hours of us getting there.

"We don't really know what happened. We are still waiting for the results of the post-mortem examination."

The family praised doctors and nurses at the hospital, who they said battled hard to save their youngest child's life.

Mr Wright, head of procurement at Birmingham City University, said: "We are just taking it from hour to hour at the moment.

"We are all devastated by what has happened.

"The nurses and doctors and all the staff at Stafford Hospital were brilliant, as was our own doctor.

"We can't thank them enough. They could not have done more for us."

Alfie died on the same night as Thomas Alleyne's sixth former Danny Edwards, who was killed in a car crash.
