COMMUNITY groups are in line for a share of £50,000 in a great Sentinel giveaway beginning today.

The Sentinel has teamed up with Staffordshire Community Foundation (SCF) to offer the cash and organisations can apply for up to £1,000.

The money can be used for buying equipment, training volunteers and organising campaigns.

The Hanley-based charity will oversee the applications, as part of its Grassroots Grants Scheme for small community groups.

Mike Sassi, Editor-in-Chief of Staffordshire Sentinel News and Media, said: "Community groups play an incredibly important role in this region. It is impossible to underestimate their fantastic work.

"Donations of between £500 and £1,000 may seem like a relatively small amount of money to some people, but they can make all the difference to groups run by volunteers.

"We are happy to help SCF distribute this money.

"It is up to groups across our region to tell us all about the great work they do."

Applications can be submitted throughout September.

Judges will consider the applications at The Sentinel's Etruria headquarters on October 5.

Cheques will be handed out at an event in November.

SCF chief executive and BBC Radio Stoke presenter Terry Walsh said: "Volunteer-led groups do so much good for the community that we want to give them help to continue making a difference for the area during difficult times.

"Quite often you don't need a lot of money to succeed as a group so these grants can really help."

The scheme is open to volunteer-led community and voluntary groups within the council areas of Stoke-on-Trent, Newcastle, the Staffordshire Moorlands and Stafford borough.

Groups must have been in operation for at least a year and had an annual income of less than £30,000 for the last three years.

To apply for a grant, email steve@staffsfoundation.org.uk or write to Steve Adams, Staffordshire Community Foundation, The Dudson Centre, Hope Street, Hanley. ST1 5DD.

“I don't know John Leese the "tin can man", but seams to me he was a single handed "group" fighting for the whole community, whilst he cant get out and ask for cash, it don't mean he wont know what best do with it. I nominate him for a stash of it.”
