TRISTRAM Hunt, the Labour MP for Stoke-on-Trent Central, reckons the Government needs to be doing more to boost employment in the region.

That's probably true – the failure to award North Staffordshire an enterprise zone, despite Prime Minister David Cameron apparently promising to do so when he visited Portmeirion in Stoke last year, still rankles.

And the ceramics industry warned that measures announced by chancellor George Osborne in November to help energy-intensive firms avoid the crippling costs of climate change taxes simply did not go far enough.

Still, credit where credit's due – as you can read on page 12, the Government's regional employer National Insurance contribution holiday scheme has helped new firms in North Staffordshire create 107 new jobs.

Nationally, it seems the scheme has failed to live up to expectations, but on a local level 100-plus new jobs is not to be sniffed at.

The scheme is running until September 2013, so I'd urge anyone considering setting up a new business to check it out.
